Project-X: Hmong Text Reader
Project #: 00146032HR
Project Start Date: February 17, 2002
Project End Date: N/A
Author(s): Koua Lo, Pa Houa Lee

Purpose: this program will read Hmong text back to the end-user as well as providing the definitions of the words. Users can simply hover their mouse over the Hmong words to see its definition. Currently, HTR understands roughly about 2,000 words of the "White" Hmong dialect. This program will also read dates, numbers and simple monetary units. It can also read "joined" words (although not proper writing) to address new Hmong language learners as they have a tendency to create their own words by joining them together.

Since the program was built to be expandable, increasing its "vocabulary" or the number of words it can read simply involves someone taking the time to record ALL of the possible Hmong words. To have this program read the "Green" Hmong dialect, all you have to do is record all of the words in the Green Hmong dialect. If you want to contribute your voice to this project, let us know and we will send you instructions on how to record and name the files. Any contributions you made will be noted in the development logs and credited in the program.
